Caring for extensions: how to keep them beautiful for longer
Share
Professional extensions are an investment in your hair. Their lifespan depends not only on quality, but also on your at-home routine. Gentle habits can prevent unnecessary friction, tangles and strain on the bonds.
1. Brush gently and regularly
Support the hair at the roots with one hand and start at the ends. Then work upwards in small sections. Never pull hard through a knot, and use a brush designed for extensions. Do not forget the nape and the areas behind the ears: movement and clothing can cause more friction there.
2. Detangle before washing
Brush gently before the hair gets wet. Wash upright and let the water flow from top to bottom. Avoid scrubbing in circles, piling the hair on top of your head or washing upside down. Gently work shampoo between the bonds without pulling on them.
3. Apply care products to the lengths
Conditioner, masks and oils should mainly be applied to the mid-lengths and ends. Do not apply oily or very smoothing products directly to Keratin bonds, rings or the attachment edge of a weft. They can reduce grip and cause build-up.
4. Dry the bonds completely
Gently squeeze excess water from the hair and pat it with a towel; do not rub roughly. First dry the scalp and bonds with a hairdryer at a suitable temperature. In particular, do not leave a Genius Weft attachment wet for a long time. Then dry the lengths downwards.
5. Protect against heat
Human hair can be blow-dried, curled and straightened, but extensions do not receive natural nourishment from the scalp. Always use heat protection and avoid the highest setting unless needed. Never touch Keratin bonds directly with straighteners or a curling iron.
6. Braid loosely before bed
Do not go to bed with wet hair. Brush it and wear it in a loose braid or low ponytail secured with a soft hair tie. A smooth pillowcase may reduce friction. Avoid tight styles that pull on the bonds all night.
7. Exercise and swimming
Tie your hair back for exercise without putting the bonds under tight strain. Brush and dry sweaty hair afterwards. Before swimming, wet the hair with clean water and braid it. Rinse out chlorine or seawater as soon as possible. Sun, salt and chlorine can affect colour and softness, especially in blonde shades.
8. Keep up with maintenance appointments
As your hair grows, the distance between the scalp and the attachment changes. Hair may then twist or tangle more easily. Have a Genius Weft moved up on time and have Keratin extensions removed professionally. Never pull, cut or loosen the bonds yourself.
