Silicone-coated hair extensions: instant shine or lasting quality?
Share
With new hair extensions, the first touch says a lot, but not everything. A strikingly smooth and shiny surface can come from healthy, aligned hair cuticles, proper care, or an applied coating. That is why, at FEE Extensions, we look beyond the first impression: how does the hair behave after washing, styling, re-applying, and coloring?
Our choice is clear: 100% Remy Human Hair with intact, aligned cuticles, without a heavy masking silicone coating. The hair receives a light treatment with sericin, a silk protein that forms a subtle protective film and helps reduce friction and tangles.
Are silicones bad for hair extensions?
The honest answer is nuanced. Silicones are not inherently bad. In well-formulated shampoos and conditioners, certain silicones can reduce friction, make combing easier, and add shine. This is also described in scientific reviews on hair cosmetics and silicones.
With extensions, the difference arises when a thick factory coating is used primarily to make heavily processed or damaged hair feel exceptionally smooth at the first touch. Such a surface layer cannot repair the underlying hair fiber. When the cosmetic effect wears off, the true quality of the hair becomes visible. A coating is therefore no substitute for an intact cuticle.
The FEE standard: quality must prove itself after the first wash and during wear, not just when the packaging is opened.
Why the cuticle is more important than the initial shine
The exterior of a hair consists of overlapping scales, the cuticle. When those scales are intact and all hairs run in the same direction from root to tip, the fibers move more smoothly against each other. That helps limit friction, tangles, and a rough feel.
This is the core of Remy hair. With hair where the direction is mixed, the scales can interlock. It can then tangle more quickly, even if it feels soft in the packaging initially. For a salon, the origin and processing of the hair is therefore more relevant than an extreme, immediate shine.
What is sericin?
Sericin is a protein from silk. It can form a light film around the hair fiber and is being researched for protective and nourishing applications. Research into treatments with silk proteins, including fibroin and sericin, describes the protection of mechanical and structural properties in chemically treated hair. That research is broader than FEE Extensions and does not constitute an individual product test, but it does support why a light protein treatment is a more interesting approach than a heavy masking coating.
At FEE, the treatment remains intentionally light. It supports the natural softness of the intact cuticle, helps reduce friction and tangles, and leaves the hair reusable. Professional darkening or tone-on-tone coloring remains possible. Always test a small strand first and avoid bleaching.
Why FEE Extensions chooses this approach
- 100% Remy Human Hair: real human hair with natural movement.
- Intact, aligned cuticle: the hair scales run in the same direction from root to tip.
- No masking silicone coating: the initial softness does not need to hide damaged fibers.
- Light sericin treatment: a subtle protective film of silk protein helps reduce friction and tangles.
- Double Drawn: short hairs are largely removed for fuller lengths and beautifully filled ends.
- Suitable for professional reuse: with correct placement, care, and maintenance.
What does the hairstylist notice in the salon?
A professional assessment does not start with how smooth the hair comes out of the packaging. Look at the natural movement, the distribution of the ends, the ease of combing after a few washes, and the behavior during styling. Intact cuticles and consistent fiber quality provide a fairer starting point for placement and aftercare.
Premium hair also requires care. Use products suitable for extensions, avoid oil and conditioner on the attachments, protect the hair from excessive heat, and brush carefully from the ends upwards. Longevity always depends on technique, home care, wearing habits, and the condition of the natural hair.
How to recognize quality that goes beyond the first touch
- Ask if the cuticle is intact and runs in one direction.
- Ask if a coating is used and exactly what it does.
- Assess the hair after washing, drying, and styling as well.
- Check if lengths and ends are evenly filled.
- Test a small strand before any color treatment.
- Follow a professional placement and maintenance routine.
