On vacation with hair extensions: sun, sea, and swimming pool
Share
You can go on vacation and swim with hair extensions, as long as you consciously limit exposure to the sun, salt, chlorine, and friction. Brush beforehand, wear your hair in a relaxed braid, rinse immediately with fresh water, and, most importantly, dry the attachment points completely.
Why vacation requires extra attention
Extension hair does not receive natural sebum from the scalp. As a result, sun, wind, salt, and chlorine can make the lengths dry or stiff more quickly. Furthermore, wet hair is more susceptible to friction and tangling. A simple routine prevents many problems.
Before swimming
- Brush the hair carefully and remove all tangles.
- Wet the lengths with fresh water so that they absorb less pool or seawater.
- If appropriate, apply a small amount of protective product to the lengths, not to the attachment points.
- Wear your hair in a loose, secure braid.
A messy bun is less suitable when the hair gets wet: loose lengths can rub against each other and tangle together.
After the sea or pool
Rinse out salt and chlorine as soon as possible with fresh water. Gently undo the braid, support the hair at the base, and detangle from the ends upwards. Wash with appropriate care products when necessary and dry the scalp and attachment points completely first.
Do not leave a Genius Weft wet for long periods and never go to sleep with wet extensions.
Sunscreen and blonde extensions
Some sun products, in combination with minerals and sun, can cause unwanted discoloration, especially on very light or blonde lengths. Avoid letting the hair rub against freshly applied lotion on your shoulders or back. Wash your hands before touching the extensions and wear long hair up if necessary while applying lotion.
Does orange or pink discoloration occur anyway? Do not immediately use aggressive home remedies or prolonged use of silver shampoo. Contact your specialist.
Protecting against sun and dehydration
- Wear a hat or scarf in bright sun.
- Use a suitable product with heat or UV protection.
- Avoid daily, long-term sunbathing with hair worn loose.
- Apply conditioner or mask only to the mid-lengths and ends.
- Do not use excessive heat on hair that already feels dry.
Working out, saunas, and hot weather
Secure your hair while working out without pulling hard on the attachment points. Do not leave sweaty hair damp at the roots for hours. In a sauna, it is wise to limit the duration of your stay, wear your hair securely tied up, and dry it completely afterward.
The vacation checklist
- extension brush;
- soft hair ties without metal;
- mild shampoo and conditioner for the lengths;
- heat or UV protection;
- wide-tooth comb for the ends;
- hat or scarf;
- small hairdryer if the accommodation does not have a suitable one.
What to do in case of tangles?
Stop brushing forcefully. Let the hair dry completely, divide it into small sections, and work carefully from the ends. Hold the base so you don't pull on the attachment points. If the tangle is close to bondings or a weft, ask a specialist for help.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can you swim with hair extensions?
Yes, but limit prolonged contact with salt and chlorine. Wear your hair in a braid, rinse immediately, and dry the attachment points completely.
Can blonde extensions turn orange from sunscreen?
This can happen upon contact with certain sun products and minerals. Avoid contact with skin that has lotion on it and wash your hands before touching the hair.
Can you air-dry extensions?
The lengths can partially air-dry if they are positioned neatly, but the scalp, bondings, and weft edges must be dried carefully.
How should you wear your extensions while sleeping on vacation?
Go to sleep with completely dry hair in a loose braid. A smooth pillowcase can help reduce extra friction.
